Curler, Sprawler or Leaner? Choosing a Bed by Sleep Style

The best bed for your pet isn't about the size of the dog. It's about how they sleep. Spend one evening watching your pet nap, then match them below.

The Curler

Curls into a tight donut, nose tucked into tail. Curlers love feeling hugged, so look for round beds with raised sides they can burrow into.

Try: the Super Soft Faux Fur Pet Bed or the Corduroy Basket Pet Bed.

The Sprawler

Flops on their side or belly with legs stretched out, sometimes upside down. Sprawlers need flat space more than walls.

Try: the Two-Sided Linen Pet Mat or the Rectangular Pet Bed.

The Leaner

Rests their chin on the arm of the couch, your leg, or the edge of anything nearby. Leaners love a bolster to prop their head on.

Try: the Pet Sofa Bed with Egg-Crate Foam. The raised sides make a perfect pillow, and the foam base is kind to older joints.

The Hot Sleeper

Always looking for the cool tile floor? Thick-coated breeds and Florida summers both make for warm sleepers. Skip the plush and go breathable.

Try: the Breathable Airflow Pet Mat. It's low-profile, so it fits in crates too.

Getting the size right

  • Measure your pet from nose to the base of the tail while they're lying down.
  • Sprawlers: add 8–12 inches so they can stretch out.
  • Curlers: a bed close to their curled-up length feels cozier.

Where to put it

Pets like to sleep where their people are. A bed in a quiet corner of the living room usually gets more use than one in a spare room. Out of drafts, away from heat vents, and never in direct afternoon sun.
